UK Dog Sport

If you want to challenge yourself and your dog give APT's new UK Dog Sport qualification a try. Combining elements of control, nosework and agility UK Dog Sport is a new competitive dog activity which is designed to allow participation by all breeds and standards.

What is UK Dog Sport?

UK Dog Sport a new competitive Dog Activity which is designed to allow participation by all breeds and standards.

The object of UKDS is to give people something to do more locally, with worthwhile standards and qualifications, with elements of control, nosework and agility, the aim is to provide an interesting, challenging and enjoyable pastime suitable for all dogs and handlers.

 

There are six levels to work towards with a qualification at each level. The two bottom levels are designed to encourage complete beginners with no prior dog sport experience. All the other levels offer a steady and graduated progress from complete beginner to expert.

UK Dog Sport Levels and Qualifications

The UK Dog Sport course is split into the following levels with a qualification at each level.
 

Foundation - Beginner - Novice - Intermediate -Advance - Expert
 

The Foundation and Beginner levels are designed to encourage complete beginners with no prior dog sport experience. All the higher levels offer a steady and graduated progress from complete beginner to expert. All levels consist of the following common elements with increasing difficulty and complexity.

Agility

The Agility element of the UKDS qualification has been designed to cater for all breeds of dogs, It includes various obstacles including a tunnel, A Frame and hurdle which will be lowered for smaller dogs.

Search

Including elements of nosework, the Search element of the UKDS course consists of a marked search area in which four articles are hidden. It is then your dog's task to locate these items and return them to the handler.

Control

Consists of Heelwork, Recall and Retrieve. Heelwork expects your dog to walk close to the handler's left side in a natural manner. Recall leaves the dog in a sit before coming to front and heel. Retrieve is bringing back a dumbell

Qualifications & Ethos

The ethos of UK Dog Sport is for dogs and handlers to have fun, but nevertheless it is a proper competition with qualifications to aim for, so can provide a challenge and a sense of achievement for those that qualify. There are winners and places at each level but still the overall aim is to qualify and at the top level the chance to compete for a Supreme qualification.
